The Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and Development, Inc., (CESD), was created in 1981. We are a nonprofit organization affiliated with West Virginia University (WVU). The nonprofit exempt purpose of CESD is to promote advancement of education, research, and economic development including reducing the burden of government. When we began, our projects focused primarily on improving productivity in manufacturing organizations and providing managerial and technical support to new businesses in West Virginia. Since then, our focus has broadened to include bordering states, and we have expanded our support to virtually every type of organization in the region. The types of projects we support have also become more diverse as CESD continually adds to our available tools. By focusing on real problems faced by employers in the state and the region, we are making tangible improvements to businesses that contribute to West Virginia's economy and our people.

Healthcare and nursing specifically. Our institution had a great idea and the human resources to complete the task, but not the financial resources. We were connected with a small-scale funder who provided a relatively small grant that acted as seed money for the program. We ere then able to access larger private funding sources and federal grants and now have a robust regional program that targets non-timber forest product producers, but also provides connections between people and other resources!

The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation makes charitable grants in a ten county area of WV. We place priority on communities that are not already served by another community foundation. Marian Clowes, Associate Director of Community Leadership is our key contact for Grant inquiries.
I am the main point of contact to assist with these things. Most of our contacts are already overburdened, so I didn't attach it. It seems when you have someone good in the community, a lot of people take advantage, and they are usually too kind-hearted to say no. As for connecting, I have lots of stories for just talking to people who have or know others that can help. Its the importance of getting the word out and communicating what you need, so others see the opportunity to help.

Public Relations and Marketing Consultant. We volunteered our resources to a group that raised over $30,000 at the onset of the pandemic. We assisted them in creating a website with intakes where needs were addressed and dollar amounts requested. This site has donation capabilities so that it could also be used for fundraising. We have connected entrepreneurs with the resources they need but were unable to get on their own. One specific case is a recycled batter that is eco-friendly and will go to a worldwide market. We developed a color palette and logo (no cost to them) and connected them to venture capitalists to raise funds to achieve their goals.

The Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program is called upon in a variety of situation from trails to promoting outdoor recreation for youth. There is not project too small or too big for the program. One project that comes to mind involves a county attempting to highlight their outdoor recreation opportunities along their river front. They wanted to work with neighboring counties to coordinate their efforts, organize community feedback across multiple counties, and build on existing opportunities. RTCA helped them build stronger relationships with multiple organizations in the area, designed the community feedback tools, and brought new ideas to age-old challenges. All of these outcomes focused on community priorities and goals. RTCA simply provides an extra hand, an extra head, and a lot of energy to get projects done.
